Description:
Historic Arts & Crafts home, majestically set in the picturesque Mountain Lakes enclave, is a classic reminder of a celebrated era of sophisticated style, graceful beauty and fine design. The 12-room Center Hall Colonial, built in 1912, has been lovingly restored to its former glory, masterfully blending original period details with 21st century amenities. This historic residence offers the best of both worlds -- the distinction of the past, as well as the convenience and luxury of today. Influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement of the early 20th century, local developer and entrepreneur Herbert J. Hapgood built homes in the Mountain Lakes region with variations of Colonial and neo-classical details. The Hapgood homes promoted outdoor living and were designed to complement the landscape, located on natural, rather than graded terrain. By the end of 1912, two hundred Hapgood homes were sold and occupied and by 1923, approximately six hundred stucco houses were built to meet the overwhelming demand. Few of the area’s Hapgood homes remain as faithful to the era as this one on Laurel Hill Road. Complete with three levels, a grand porch and family room, as well as a stone staircase that overlooks the home's private acre of property, this handsome home invites its owners to step back in time. Oak parquet flooring runs throughout the foyer, living room, dining room and breakfast room. Natural chestnut trim and wainscoting adorn the foyer where French doors lead to the oversized family room with its stucco walls and arched windows that take in the outside views. The formal dining room exudes graceful elegance, boasting a coffered ceiling and floor-to-ceiling wainscoting on the walls and a butler's pantry with a bar sink and original glass-front top cabinets. The charming living room features a beamed ceiling, a wood-burning brick fireplace with a wood mantle and built-in brass and glass doors as well as built-in bookcases. The updated kitchen boasts top-of-the-line appliances, oak plank flooring, oak cabinets, a ceramic tile backsplash and a separate laundry room with shelves. The second floor is home to the master bedroom suite and three of the home's seven bedrooms, all featuring original pine wood floors. The master suite offers a walk-in closet and French doors that lead to the home's upper balcony. Its bathroom is appointed with ceramic tile walls and flooring with a bathtub and a separate stall shower. Built in cabinets and shelves as well as walk-in closets in the additional bedrooms offer an abundance of storage space. Three additional bedrooms are found on the third level of the home, all with oak flooring. An eyelid dormer window highlights one bedroom and a full bathroom boasts the original pedestal sink and claw foot bathtub. The beauty of the property, which features a circular driveway, brick walkways, towering oak trees, and specimen plantings, including two Japanese maple trees, matches the charm and character of the home’s distinctive interior.
