KNIGHTSHEYES COURT

Knightsheyes was designed by the architect William Burges (1827 - 1881). Burges was primarily a builder of churches and a decorator. At the age of fourteen Burges had fallen in love with thirteenth-century Gothic architecture, which became his life long obsession. During his comparatively short career, some of the most bizarre interiors ever conceived during the nineteenth century were the product of his fertile imagination.
Building at Knightsheyes began in 1869, and by 1874 the house was structurally complete, but by then the architect and client were at odds over the interior decoration.
Burges had presented his ambitious plans in a handsome folio album, but these were far too lavish for Sir John's taste and John Dibblee Crace (1838 - 1919) was commissioned to complete the work that he achieved by 1883
