GLASGOW
SCHOOL OF ART
In the final years of the 19th century it was decided that
the Corporation galleries were no longer sufficient to house
the Glasgow School of Art, and Francis Newbery, the school's
director, called together a meeting of the governors to discuss
fund raising for a new building.
Mackintosh created something new, and it was to become his
masterpiece - being not only innovative and his largest project
to date, but perhaps one of the most influential buildings
ever constructed in Great Britain. He had supplied what the
governors had requested: a plain functional building created
with the artist in mind.
