Morris & Co.
The decorating firm which later became known as Morris &
Co was founded in 1861. Soon after the foundation of Morris,
Marshall, Faulkner and Co., Morris was shrewd enough to realise
that if the firm was to be established as successful decorators
and furnishers, then he would have to undertake the design
and manufacture of more commercial furnishings than had previously
been attempted. Patterned textiles in particular were needed
for use on walls, at windows and as loose covers and upholstery
on furniture.
Morris’ interest in contemporary Indian designs was soon
followed by his love of historic textiles from Italy, Persia
and Turkey.
Morris loved the practical labour of drawing patterns and
by the summer of 1876 was so pre-occupied with designing that
even his rest became affected. To Aglaia coronio he wrote,
‘I am drawing so fast that last night I dreamed I had
to draw a sausage, somehow I had to eat it first which made
me anxious about my digestion’
