Kelmscott
In recognition of William Morris' contribution to the decorative
arts, Kelmscott has been named after his houses in Oxfordshire
and London where his textile designs were an integral part
of the decoration.
Six authentic patterns, selected from tapestry, carpet and
embroidery designs, have, for the first time, been interpreted
as printed fabrics. Great care has been taken in the colouring
and drawing to preserve the appearance of the originals.
Granada is derived from Morris' only velvet design, which
depicted a rich pattern brocaded with gilt thread. McCullogh,
from the renowned carpet of the same name, was designed by
Dearle, Morris' assistant. Both are appropriately printed
on soft textured chenille.
Adaptations of stitched wool embroideries from the 1860's
show simpler naïve motifs. Kencot is an interpretation
of the 'Sunflower' pattern and 'Lechlade' is taken from 'Daisy'
sewn by Morris wife, Jane.
Traditional foliage, which characterised early embroideries,
is represented by two designs, 'Artichoke' and 'Acanthus and
Vine', printed on linen union. The latter was the first tapestry
that Morris wove at Kelmscott House in 1879.
