Jacques GRUBER Sundhausen 1870 - Paris 1936. Decorator and artist-glassmaker
Starting in 1889, Jacques Gruber studied in Paris at the School of Decorative Arts and the School of Fine Art, and regularly visited the studio of the artist, Gustave Moreau. In 1893 he joined Daum as Chief Decorator and taught at the Nancy School of Fine Art until 1916.
Before setting up his own stained glass workshop in 1904, he realised a number of works at the glassmaker, Charles Gauvillé's, workshop. Though this technique was his main interest, he also contributed to other decorative arts. In fact he collaborated with several Nancy manufacturers and craftsmen, supplying them with models and designs for furniture, bookbindings, and fired earthenware objects. He also designed menus and programs for Nancy printers.
He was an extremely important master glassmaker, chosen not only by Louis Majorelle, Eugène Corbin, and Albert Bergeret, but also by the Jacques Gruber moved to Paris in 1914 and was highly successful during the artistic renaissance provoked by Art Deco.
